Network Adapters: common questions

Are third-party transceivers compatible with my switch?
Many switches only accept optics coded for their brand. Each transceiver listing shows the brand it is made for. Tell us your switch model if you are unsure.
What is the difference between SR and LR optics?
SR (short reach) optics use multimode fiber for short links within a room or building. LR (long reach) optics use single-mode fiber for longer distances. The maximum reach is listed in each product's specifications.
Will a standard PCIe adapter fit my server?
Check the slot type first. Many servers use OCP 3.0 cards or vendor mezzanine cards such as HPE FlexibleLOM, which are not standard PCIe. For PCIe cards, check the bracket height (full height or low profile).
When should I use a DAC or AOC cable instead of optics?
Passive DAC cables are the lowest-cost option for short links inside a rack. AOCs reach further and are lighter. For longer runs or existing fiber, use optics. The length and speed are in each cable's title.
