NetApp designed the FAS9000 as a modular, high-end unified controller. Its 8U chassis holds the HA pair, and every host and storage port lives on I/O modules: there are no onboard ports at all. With 20 I/O module slots, you build exactly the mix of host and storage connections the site needs.
Inside, the HA pair has four 64-bit 18-core processors at 2.3GHz, 1024GB of memory and 64GB of NVRAM. The system supports up to 1440 drives through attached shelves, which puts it in the range of large consolidated SAN/NAS deployments on ONTAP.
