The Dell PowerVault MD1400 is a 12-bay, 3.5in expansion enclosure that connects to its host over 12Gb SAS. It is a 2U direct-attached JBOD, and 2.5in drives can be used with carriers.
Dual enclosure management modules (EMM) handle monitoring. Up to 8 enclosures can sit behind one PERC H830/H840 controller. Power comes from 600W AC or 700W DC supplies, which matters for data centers wired for DC.
It suits capacity expansion for servers with a compatible 12Gb SAS controller: backup targets, file stores and archive volumes that need large drives in a compact shelf.
