Twenty-four small-form-factor bays in 2U is the main feature of the Dell PowerVault MD1220. It is a direct-attached expansion enclosure (JBOD) for 2.5in drives, connected to its host over 6Gb SAS.
It includes dual enclosure management modules (EMM), and the 24 bays take 2.5in SFF drives over a 6Gb SAS host connection.
A high count of 2.5in bays suits SSD and 2.5in SAS drive deployments that need many spindles or flash drives for database, virtualization or analytics storage, without using internal bays in the host server.
