Overview

The IBM 3592-E07, better known as the TS1140, is an enterprise tape drive in the IBM 3592 format rather than an LTO drive. It writes 4TB native per cartridge at a native data rate of 250MB/s, with a 1 GiB buffer.

Host connection is dual-port switched Fibre Channel at 8Gb. Hardware encryption is supported, which matters for sites that must protect data on tapes stored offsite.

The drive is used in the IBM TS3500 tape library and with 3592 C07 and C06 tape controllers. Mainframe and large open-systems shops that still run TS3500 libraries are the typical buyers, whether to replace a failed drive or to keep a spare on hand.
