Overview

IBM 02CL197 is the battery module for the FlashSystem 840 and FlashSystem 900. Unlike a canister battery, it is an enclosure battery module, installed in the array enclosure itself.

Its job is to hold the enclosure up during a power outage long enough for the system to protect data in flight and shut down in an orderly way. Batteries age even when they are rarely used, so replacing them when the system reports a fault keeps that protection working.

The FlashSystem 840 and 900 remain in use for fast flash storage at many sites, and spare battery modules help keep those systems supported after the original service contract ends.
