Overview
SWDM stands for short wavelength division multiplexing, and in the Arista 100GBASE-SWDM4 QSFP Transceiver, part number QSFP-100G-SWDM4, it allows 100GbE over a duplex pair of multimode fiber with an LC connector. The rated reach is 70 m on OM3 and 100 m on OM4.
The advantage is cabling reuse. Many data centers already have duplex LC multimode fiber from earlier, slower deployments. This module lets such a plant carry 100GbE without pulling new parallel trunks, which is a significant saving when the fiber is in conduit or under floors.
The module has a QSFP28 form factor and one port. As with any optic, check that your switch or adapter accepts it, and use the same module type at the far end of the link.
Check the fiber grade on each run. The OM3 and OM4 limits differ, so a single older segment can set the maximum distance.
