A direct-attach cable replaces a pair of optics and a fiber patch lead with a single copper assembly. The HPE Aruba Networking R0Z25A does that for 100GbE: it has a QSFP28 connector on each end and is 1m long.
One meter covers links between devices in the same rack, such as a switch to a server directly below it, or two stacked switches. Copper DACs draw no optic power and avoid the cost of transceivers, which is why they are common for in-rack 100GbE.
