Overview

The Seagate ST8000AS0002 is an Archive HDD v2: an 8TB 3.5in hard drive designed for data that is written once and read now and then. It uses SMR (drive-managed) recording, which packs tracks closely to reach that capacity. The drive manages SMR itself, so the host sees an ordinary SATA disk.

Key specs:

- SATA 6Gb/s interface, 512e sector format - 128MB cache and a maximum transfer rate of 190 MB/s - 800,000 hours MTBF and a 180 TB/yr workload rating - 7.5 W operating power, 5 W at idle, 780 g

The workload rating and SMR recording point to archives, backup targets and cold storage, where data is mostly written in large blocks and kept for a long time.

The ST8000AS0002 is offered New, Refurbished or Used. New and Refurbished drives come with 1 year or 3 years of warranty. Used drives come with 90 days.
