Self-encrypting drives (SED) encrypt everything written to them in hardware, so data at rest stays protected if a drive leaves the building. The Dell X7NC4 is a 2.4TB SED hard drive for 2.5in SFF bays.

It spins at 10000 RPM (10K) and connects over SAS at 12Gb/s. A 10K SAS drive gives better random performance than nearline drives, which suits general application storage, virtual machines and databases that need capacity at a moderate cost.

To use the encryption, the server's RAID controller and management software must support SED key management. Without it, the drive works as a standard SAS drive.

The OEM part number ST2400MM0159 refers to the same drive from its manufacturer, so you may see either number on a label.
