Four processor sockets in a 2U chassis set the Dell PowerEdge R840 apart from the usual dual-socket servers. It supports 2nd Generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors and offers 48 DDR4 memory slots, with a listed ceiling of 6144 GB.

That combination fits large databases, big virtualization hosts and other jobs that want a lot of cores and memory in one system. Storage is generous: up to 24 x 2.5in front bays plus 2 x 2.5in at the rear. There are 6 expansion slots for controllers, network adapters and other cards.
