Some environments require every drive to encrypt data at rest. The Dell HNHWC meets that need: it is a self-encrypting drive (SED) with FIPS 140 encryption, so data is encrypted by the drive itself as it is written.

Capacity is 16TB in a 3.5in LFF form factor. The drive spins at 7.2K RPM and connects over 12Gb/s SAS. It uses 512e sector formatting, which presents 512-byte logical sectors on top of larger physical sectors for compatibility with operating systems and controllers that expect 512-byte sectors.

To use the encryption, the controller and management software need to support SED key management.
