The Cisco QSFP-100G-AOC1M is the shortest active optical cable in the 100G QSFP28 line, at 1 m. The optics are built into both ends, and multimode fiber runs between them.

At this length it connects devices within the same rack. A copper cable could do the same job; buyers choose optical when they prefer the thinner fiber for cable management or already standardize on AOC for their 100G links.
